Worn cylinders, forced ignitions and switches that have failed.
Before we touch the lock, you know what it will cost.
Call if you need someone right now. Otherwise send this and we will contact you back.
An ignition that has stopped working is usually one of three problems, and they are not interchangeable. Replacing the wrong part costs money and fixes nothing.
Years of use round off the wafers inside. The key goes in and nothing happens.
Someone tried to start the car without a key. This is common in San Francisco and it is a different repair.
Sometimes the ignition is fine and the key has worn down. We check before replacing anything.

For common makes the cylinder is on the van and the work happens where the car sits. The new cylinder is keyed so one key works for the ignition and the doors.
If the key will not turn and the steering wheel is locked, the wheel may simply be pressing on the lock. Turn the wheel gently left and right while you turn the key. If it frees up, the ignition is fine.
The key has to be jiggled to turn, it sticks in the cylinder, it will not come out, or it turns all the way and nothing happens. The last one can also be the switch behind the cylinder, which is why we diagnose before we replace.
There is no ignition cylinder to wear out. When these cars will not start, the cause is usually the key fob battery or the fob itself, which is a different job.
If the key is worn, a spare that is in better shape will often still turn. If no key turns, or the cylinder spins, the ignition is the problem. We check before replacing anything.
Yes, that is a common repair here. The damaged cylinder is replaced at the car, and where the car allows it the new one is keyed to your existing key.
We try to avoid that. Where the car allows it, the new cylinder is keyed so one key works for the ignition and the doors.
