Panic hardware exists so a door can always be opened from inside by pushing, even in the dark, even in a crowd. On many commercial doors it is not optional.
Panic hardware comes in a few forms, and the door decides which one fits.
Most panic bars can take outside trim, like a key cylinder or a pull, so the door stays locked from the street while it always opens from inside. Many can also be set to stay unlatched during business hours, so customers can push the door open. On fire rated doors that is not allowed, and the hardware is made without it.
Most panic bar problems are adjustment or worn parts: a latch that no longer catches, a bar that has to be hit hard to open, or a rod that has slipped. Those are usually repaired in place.
Many commercial exit doors do, depending on how the space is used. If you are not sure, ask your building manager or the fire inspector, and we will install what is required.
